The radiation of UV rays causes changes to the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in the nucleus of cells, either directly or through the free radicals which occur. After less intensive exposure, the cells are able to repair the damage themselves within 24 hours. If the repair systems are overloaded, premature skin aging and chronic light damage arise. Depending on the radiation intensity and skin type, the skin experiences a certain sensation of heat accompanied by more or less intense reddening directly after exposure to the sun.
